Viking Voyage II: The Blog
This blog will document the Viking Wrestlers' 2012 Camp Voyage
Viking Voyage II: Final Entry
Viking Voyage II is complete. Yesterday we ‘docked’ at Union Pines High School and were welcomed by our family and friends.
The trailer and vehicles were unloaded and the wrestlers went home to their own beds after fifteen days of sleeping on wrestling mats, air mattresses, and couches. Banged up, bruised, and definitely tired, nevertheless each wrestler has good reason to hold their head high. The team accomplished a lot together and individually during the last two weeks. However, none of these accomplishments would have been possible without a great supporting cast.
First and forever foremost, Big Joe Van Cleave gets our gratitude for taking two weeks off and driving the team over 1530 miles.
Big Joe was not just a chauffeur, he was a coach, mentor, parent, counselor, and confidant. The next time you see him, and the five times after that, make sure you tell him how much you appreciate him. The Ambrose family also deserves our gratitude, giving up their vehicle and trailer made this trip possible. Without their generosity and support we faced significant increased costs to the trip and, as those of you that unpacked dirty laundry last night, a very smell ride home! The entire Vondruska family deserves our thanks. Their generosity and hospitality is incredible and I for one am very thankful to have them as friends and extended family members.
The team building that occurred during this trip will pay off for us as we enter this wrestling season. Each of these wrestlers overcame physical and mental challenges and walk away better wrestlers and better people. For some, this was the most physically challenging experience they have ever had. Others had never been away from home for so long. Having overcome these challenges, they now have the confidence to know that they can overcome even greater challenges. We, as a coaching staff, never forget that wrestling is not the end, it is merely a means to achieve something greater. Throughout this trip, our team displayed the class and sportsmanship that we have come to be known for. I am very proud to be associated with them. The team gets a well deserved week off and we will announce our next training session date/time soon. Next on the agenda are the All American Duals and our elementary/middle school camp at UPHS.
A great part of our trip was the opportunity for our newest assistant coach, Josh Malave to spend time with the team at the Northeast Ohio Championship Wrestling camp and the tournament that followed. Josh and his fiancée, Jillian, are coming down this weekend to do their final house hunting. They plan on moving down two weeks after that. Please help us prepare to welcome them and their daughter (my little Carolina Girl), Sophia when they arrive and assist them with their transition. We are all very excited to have them as part of the Union Pines Wrestling Family and look forward to the impact Josh will have on the program.
All of the blog entries (each wrestler wrote at least one) are available on the Viking Voyage II Blog. Pictures are available on our photogallery and videos will slowly make their way to our video site. Thank you all again for your continued support and trusting us with your children. It is truly and honor and a blessing, and is something we do not take for granted. ~ Coach Bartram

V-Day + 14
Saturday the viking team awoke with the intent to dominate competition at the NEOCWC tournament.
Taking 5 second place finishes and 1 first place finish, the team helped roll up mats and clean up the gym before heading back to DJ Vonduska's house to clean and pack for the trip home.

After all the bags were packed and floors cleared we sat down to watch UFC 148 which had some amazing and surprising fights.

Early this morning the team awoke to start the last leg of our voyage home as we pulled out of DJ Vondruska's drive way.

We had a uneventful ride home and were surprised to pull up to the high school and find our families waiting for us under a welcome home banner.
V-Day + 11
The team got up this morning and had a nice lift took a shower and went home. Some of us slept longer some didn't. We all went to practice at 1:00pm and trained by the "wrestling samurai" Coach Hatta till 3:30pm. Wrestled the dual matches, took showers and left around 4:40pm. After that we all chilled the rest of the day and watched The Sandlot. We are all leaving at 8:00am for a run to the beach and we are all looking forward to another day to learn from some of the best.
V-Day + 12
Today was our last session of The NEOCW camp and this camp was a valuable experience for both my own technique and others. We woke up today to a two mile team beach run. It was a fun and good morning workout. We were met by DonVon who brought a kayak and a raft. We enjoyed a morning at the beach at Lake Erie. When we returned to Lutheran West we showered and started our session.
We were taught by Mike Pucillo. A two time all American, a 184 lb national champ and an Ohio State graduate. We learned and reviewed the front headlock and all the positions involved. Afterwards we had a good live session and a good dual. Later We returned to DonVon's house for dinner and cards.
V-Day + 10
We got to sleep in this morning before we ate breakfast at D.J.'s house. About 10mins after breakfast some of the team started playing X Box until we went to shower at Lutheran West. Then we went to a 4th of July party at Ms Cline's house where they had food, games, and a giant slip n' slide that almost everyone on the team had a great time messing around on with the rest of Vondruska family. Later at the party we ate dinner which was great thanks to everyone bringing some kind of food. A little later we had ice cream cake for Mr. Vondruskas 88th and Dylan Barbers 14th, Darrell's 17th, and Jenn Vondruska's birthday. Later we played some cornhole and just chilled out and talked a while. Oh I forgot to talk about the wrestling matches at the bottom of the big hill with Caleb Edwards and Bryan Capps winning matches. After we left the party we came back to D.J.'s where I was attacked by a horde of people in singlets dancing to "Party Boy." We set off fireworks then went to see a fireworks show. When the fireworks show was finished we went to bed.
